Holy Mass. Eucharist. Misa.
We have given this Holy Sacrament a good number of names, and attended it much of our Christian life, but do we really understand this Divine Work of our God who loves us so much?
This is my body. This is my blood.
For most of us, the bread we are receiving is just a small piece of circular bread which the ministers give us to eat. We fall in line in each Mass, thinking that we are worthy enough to receive this piece of bread.
But as we say AMEN, we declare that this piece of bread isn't bread at all! We declare our belief that Jesus is present in the bread, and thus telling the minister, yes, this is the Body of Jesus! We may be unworthy of this grace because of our sins, but Jesus still gives himself for us, for our sanctification and well-being inside and out.
We always go back to the Lord's Supper. Every time we celebrate the Mass, we remember how the sorrowful Lord, on the eve of his death, shared his own life for us and left us an everlasting memorial so that we may always remember how he loved us until his death on the Cross.
Times had changed, and so does the way we celebrate the Sacred. But the appreciation of the presence is still there, as we fill our churches every Sunday, singing hymns, listening to readings and receiving the body of Jesus. We are a part of the big assembly of God's people who continuously offer with Jesus, our lives with his, our prayers and aspirations with his, believing that this sacrifice is pleasing to God the Almighty Father.
Do we appreciate Jesus' loving presence in that small host we receive? Are we spiritually composed before receiving him in Holy Communion, by going first to the Sacrament of Penance? Do we believe that what we receive is Jesus in all his love, sacrifice and life? Outside the Mass, do we live as one holy sacrifice, living and loving in memory of Jesus?
This Sunday which we dedicate to the Body and Blood of Jesus, let us remember that our life as Christians is centered on the Blessed Eucharist, and that we do this IN MEI MEMORIAM!
